2025 Canadian Open Toronto ATP Draw Features Zverev Fritz Shelton

The 2025 Canadian Open in Toronto is shaping up to be one of the weakest ATP Masters 1000 tournaments we’ve seen in quite a while.

Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic have all pulled out of the event. That’s three of tennis’s biggest names missing from what’s supposed to be one of the sport’s premier tournaments.

It doesn’t stop there either.

Jack Draper, Grigor Dimitrov, and Tommy Paul also withdrew, leaving organizers scrambling to fill the void. The situation’s gotten so bad that Matteo Arnaldi, who’s ranked 44th in the world, is now the 32nd seed.

That’s pretty telling about how many top players decided to skip Toronto this year.

The tournament runs from July 27th to August 7th, and while it’ll still be competitive tennis, fans hoping to see the sport’s biggest stars might be disappointed.

Arnaldi Gets a Brutal Draw

Speaking of Arnaldi, the Italian didn’t catch any breaks when the draw came out. He landed in the top half and could face Joao Fonseca as early as the second round.

Fonseca is just 18 years old, but the Brazilian teenager has been making serious waves on tour. He’ll start against a qualifier before potentially meeting Arnaldi.

That’s exactly the kind of dangerous early matchup that can derail a tournament run.

Zverev Leads the Pack

With all the big names missing, Alexander Zverev finds himself as the top seed. The German will face either Adam Walton or Benjamin Bonzi in his opening match.

Taylor Fritz takes the second seed spot and gets either Camilo Ugo Carabelli or Roberto Carballes Baena to start his campaign.

It’s not often you see Fritz as a second seed at a Masters 1000 event, but that’s what happens when half the top 10 decides to take a break.

Holger Rune is probably licking his lips at this opportunity. The young Dane already has one ATP Masters 1000 title under his belt, and with the field this weak, he’s got a real shot at adding another one.

He’ll play either a qualifier or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his first match. Mpetshi Perricard’s got one of the biggest serves on tour, so that could be tricky if they meet.

Shelton Gets a Good Setup

Ben Shelton is always dangerous on hard courts, and he’s in a pretty good spot here. Despite being ranked eighth in the world, he’s the fourth seed in Toronto.

That means he won’t have to face any of the other top four seeds until at least the semifinals.

His path isn’t exactly smooth though. Shelton could get either a qualifier or Marcos Giron in round two, followed by a potential third-round clash with Brandon Nakashima.

Still, for a player of his caliber, that’s not too intimidating.

Russian Veterans Look for Revival

Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev used to be the next big things in tennis. These days, they’re struggling to live up to those expectations.

Maybe Toronto’s weakened field gives them a chance to rediscover their form.

Rublev is the sixth seed and landed in Fritz’s quarter. The Russian will start against either Mattia Bellucci or Hugo Gaston.

Medvedev got the 10th seed and faces Luciano Darderi or a qualifier in his opener. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the former world No. 1 really clicking, so this tournament could be important for his confidence.

The Canadian crowd will have plenty of local players to cheer for too. Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Gabriel Diallo all got direct entry into the main draw.

With the field this open, it’s anybody’s tournament. Sure, it might not have the star power of other Masters 1000 events, but that could make for some pretty unpredictable tennis.
