2025 Chengdu Open ATP Draw Features Musetti Monfils Atmane

-

The 2025 Chengdu Open draw is out, and it’s setting up some pretty interesting storylines for when the tournament kicks off on September 17th.

Here’s something unusual right off the bat. Both Chengdu and Hangzhou are starting on a Wednesday this year, which is weird since almost every tennis tournament starts on Monday with a Sunday final. But that’s how the Asian swing is rolling this time around.

The Chengdu Open has been around since 2016, and it’s had some solid champions. Karen Khachanov won the first one, followed by Denis Istomin, Bernard Tomic, Pablo Carreno Busta, Alexander Zverev, and last year’s winner Juncheng Shang.

Speaking of Shang, he’s back to defend his title.

The defending champ gets a wild card and faces Zizou Bergs in the first round. If he wins that, he’ll take on fourth-seeded Brandon Nakashima, who gets a first-round bye.

Lorenzo Musetti is the top seed this year, and there’s some history here. Last year, Shang beat him in the final, so the Italian’s definitely looking for some revenge. As the number one seed, Musetti gets a bye and will face either Dino Prizmic or Terence Atmane in his opener.

Atmane’s been having a decent year – he made the Cincinnati Open semifinals, which is no joke.

The second seed is Luciano Darderi, another Italian. He’s on the opposite side of the draw from Musetti and will start against either Jordan Thompson or a qualifier.

One matchup that could be really fun to watch involves Tallon Griekspoor. The Dutch player is solid on hard courts, and he might face Coleman Wong, who got a wild card. Wong’s one of those young players everyone’s keeping an eye on – lots of talent there.

Musetti is the only current top 10 player in the field, but there are some former top 10 guys who could make things interesting.

Cameron Norrie is the fifth seed. The Brit will play against home wild card Yi Zhou in the first round, which should give the Chinese crowd someone to cheer for.

Then there’s Gael Monfils, who’s always entertaining to watch. The Frenchman faces Alexander Shevchenko in his opener, and if he wins, he might get an all-French second-round match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Mpetshi Perricard is that big-serving guy who can be dangerous on any given day. He plays Filip Misolic first.

It’s a pretty solid field for an ATP 250 event. The mix of defending champion, former top 10 players, and rising stars should make for some good tennis when things get underway next week.
