The Asian tennis season kicks off this week with the Hangzhou Open in China, and the draw is packed with intriguing matchups.
While the women’s tour started their Asian swing a few days earlier in Seoul, the men’s action begins Wednesday, September 17th. It’s a bit unusual to start on a Wednesday, but that’s how it goes this year.
The Hangzhou Open is basically brand new. This is only its second year on the ATP Tour.

Last year’s tournament was pretty memorable. Marin Cilic beat local favorite Zhizhen Zhang in the singles final, giving the Croatian veteran another title. It was a great story for both players – Cilic proving he’s still got it, and Zhang showing Chinese tennis is on the rise.
Here’s where things get interesting: both guys are back this year, but neither one is seeded.
Zhang actually needed a wild card just to get into the tournament. That shows you how competitive tennis has become. He’ll face fellow Chinese player Yunchaokete Bu in the first round – the only all-Chinese matchup in the opening round.
The winner of that match gets a tough second-round test against Matteo Berrettini. The Italian is seeded eighth and looking to bounce back from some injury struggles.
Cilic faces an even tougher path. If he wins his first-round match against a qualifier, he’ll run straight into second seed Daniil Medvedev in round two.
Medvedev’s got his own issues to work through. The Russian has been struggling to find his best form and just made some coaching changes. This tournament could be a fresh start for him.
Top Seeds Get Favorable Draws
Andrey Rublev leads the field as the top seed. The world No. 14 gets a first-round bye, then faces either Aleksandar Kovacevic or Luca Nardi.
That’s actually not an easy second-round match. Nardi especially can be dangerous on his day.
Alexander Bublik is the third seed and also has a tricky path. He’ll face either David Goffin – a former top-10 player who knows how to win big matches – or Aleksandar Vukic, who just helped Australia reach the Davis Cup Final 8.
Fourth seed Corentin Moutet might play fellow Frenchman Arthur Cazaux or Italian Matteo Arnaldi in his opener.
Dangerous Unseeded Players
Two players stand out as potential giant-killers despite having no seeding protection.
Sebastian Korda has serious top-10 potential when he’s healthy and confident. He opens against Adam Walton, and if he gets through that, he could cause some real damage.
The other wild card – literally – is Yibing Wu. The Chinese player got a home wild card and immediately drew a tough first-round match against sixth seed Adrian Mannarino.
Wu’s got the talent and the home crowd support. That’s a dangerous combination in any tournament.
It’s pretty amazing how quickly this tournament has established itself. Being the newest event on tour, you’d expect maybe a weaker field, but they’ve attracted some serious talent for year two.
The Asian swing always produces some surprises, and with this mix of veterans, rising stars, and home favorites, Hangzhou 2025 could be really entertaining.
