2025 Shanghai Masters Prize Money & ATP Ranking Points Overview

-

The tennis world’s attention turns to Shanghai this October as one of the sport’s biggest tournaments gets ready to hand out some serious cash. The 2025 Shanghai Masters runs from October 1st to 12th, and the prize money breakdown is pretty amazing.

Jannik Sinner comes in as defending champion after beating Novak Djokovic in last year’s final. That victory was part of Sinner’s incredible 2024 season, where he seemed to have Djokovic’s number whenever they played.

But here’s the thing – Sinner’s got a massive pile of points to defend from Shanghai and the season-ending ATP Finals.

That makes his life really complicated right now. He lost the world No. 1 ranking to Carlos Alcaraz after the US Open, and those defending points aren’t going to make it any easier to get back on top.

The big three names are all on the entry list: Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic. While every player matters, these guys have basically been running men’s tennis for the past few years.

Let’s talk money. The total prize pool is an eye-watering $9,193,540.

The champion walks away with $1,124,380. That’s one of the few tournaments outside the Grand Slams that pays seven figures to the winner.

Prize money can vary slightly each year, but the ranking points stay the same. The winner gets 1,000 points – and Sinner knows he’s guaranteed to drop a bunch of points if he can’t defend what he earned last year.

Second place isn’t too shabby either. The runner-up gets 650 points and $597,890.

Since the tournament started in 2009, some pretty big names have finished second here. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray have all been runners-up at some point.

Make it to the semifinals? You’re looking at 400 points and $332,160. Not a bad consolation prize if you can’t quite get over the line.

Carlos Alcaraz had a shocker last year, losing in the quarterfinals to Tomas Machac. Nobody saw that coming. Players who match Alcaraz’s 2024 performance will earn 200 points and $189,075.

Even reaching the round of 16 guarantees a six-figure payday. Players get $103,225 and 100 points for making it that far. For unseeded players, that means winning three matches to reach the big money.

The cash starts to drop off after that, but it’s still decent. Third round losers get $60,400 and 50 points for finishing among the top 32 players.

Second round exits earn $35,260 and 30 points. Here’s something interesting – unlike smaller tournaments, even first-round losers get ranking points at Masters 1000 events. Lose in round one and you still walk away with $23,760 and 10 points.

This is the second-to-last Masters 1000 event of 2025, and the final one with a 96-player draw. It could be huge for deciding who makes the year-end ATP Finals.

Jack Draper’s hopes of qualifying are already over after he ended his season early with an injury.
