Alcaraz Sinner Djokovic & Top Tennis Players

-

The 2025 Shanghai Masters is coming up fast, running from October 1st to 12th. The tournament just released its entry list, and it’s packed with some serious star power.

This tournament has been a massive hit since it started back in 2009. The crowds are always incredible, and players really seem to love the energy there.

Shanghai is the crown jewel of the Asian swing, which kicks off next week with tournaments in Hangzhou and Chengdu. Last year’s Hangzhou Open had quite the story – Marin Cilic won the whole thing and became the lowest-ranked men’s singles champion in ATP history. Pretty amazing comeback for the veteran.

The Defending Champion’s Journey

Jannik Sinner won Shanghai last year, and that title was just one highlight from his breakthrough 2024 season.

The Italian added two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open that year. This year’s been even better – he’s picked up two more major crowns at Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

But Sinner’s coming into the Asian swing after a tough loss. Carlos Alcaraz completely outplayed him in the 2025 US Open final.

Sinner will warm up at the China Open in Beijing the week before Shanghai. He won that tournament in 2023, but Alcaraz beat him in a brutal three-hour final last year.

Alcaraz’s Different Path

Tennis fans were hoping to see another Sinner vs Alcaraz showdown in Beijing, but that’s not happening.

Alcaraz is heading to the Japan Open in Tokyo instead. He’ll use that as his prep for Shanghai.

Last year in Shanghai didn’t go great for the Spaniard – he lost to Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals. But Alcaraz should be feeling pretty confident this time around.

He just had an incredible run of eight straight finals from Monte-Carlo all the way to the US Open. That streak helped him reclaim the world No. 1 ranking from Sinner.

The Djokovic Question Mark

Novak Djokovic is on the entry list, but nobody’s really sure if he’ll actually show up.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion has been playing a much lighter schedule lately, focusing mainly on the four major tournaments.

Still, he did play Shanghai last year. Made it all the way to the final before losing to Sinner.

That loss extended a pretty rough streak for Djokovic – Sinner has now beaten him six times in a row, including at the Six Kings Slam.

Injury Concerns

A couple of big names might not make it due to health issues.

Ben Shelton is listed but he’s dealing with an injury. The Australian Open semifinalist had to retire against Adrian Mannarino at the US Open and missed both the Davis Cup and Laver Cup.

Jack Draper definitely won’t be there. The Brit ended his entire 2025 season early because of an arm injury. He was supposed to play the Six Kings Slam too before the injury forced him out.

Plenty of Star Power

Even with some question marks, the field is still loaded with talent.

Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Frances Tiafoe, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alex de Minaur are all confirmed.

When the tournament gets underway, fans should be in for some fantastic tennis. The Shanghai crowds always bring incredible energy, and with this kind of field, it’s going to be special.

The Asian swing tournaments before Shanghai will give us a good sense of who’s playing their best tennis heading into the main event.
