Fan Tries to Steal from Jannik Sinner at US Open

-

Jannik Sinner is cruising through the 2025 US Open, but he almost had something stolen right after his latest win.

The world No. 1 had just demolished Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in what was supposed to be a competitive fourth-round match. Instead, it turned into an absolute beatdown that lasted just one hour and 23 minutes.

After wrapping up the match, Sinner did what he always does. He walked over to the fans near his bench to sign some balls and take selfies.

That’s when things got weird.

While Sinner was being nice to his supporters, one fan apparently thought it was the perfect time to try stealing something from his bag. Even with two bodyguards watching, this person went for it anyway.

Fortunately, one of the bodyguards spotted what was happening and shut it down immediately.

Sinner wasn’t having it. He was clearly annoyed and walked away from the whole group.

You can’t really blame him. The guy’s just trying to be nice to his fans after a big win, and someone tries to rob him? That’s pretty messed up.

This wouldn’t have been the first tennis theft in New York this year either. Sorana Cirstea had her Cleveland Open trophy stolen from her hotel room earlier this season.

Revenge served cold

Before his match against Bublik, Sinner had told Anna Wintour and Rami Malek that he was looking for revenge. Bublik had beaten him earlier this year in Halle, and Sinner clearly hadn’t forgotten about it.

Mission accomplished.

"We know each other very well. We had some tough battles, especially this year, so we know each other a little bit better now how we play. He just said congrats and wished me all the best. He had a very tough match the last match playing five sets, finishing very late."

Sinner was pretty clinical about the whole thing. Bublik wasn’t serving nearly as well as he usually does, which made Sinner’s job a lot easier.

"Today he didn’t serve as good as he usually serves, so I broke him very early in every set, which then gave me the confidence to serve a little bit better."

That’s an understatement. When you’re winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, pretty much everything’s going your way.

All-Italian quarter-final coming up

Next up for Sinner is Lorenzo Musetti, setting up an all-Italian showdown in the quarter-finals.

Sinner’s genuinely excited about how well Italian tennis is doing right now. It’s not just him carrying the flag anymore.

"It’s great to see. Italian tennis is in great form now. We have so many players, so many different game styles. Lorenzo is maybe one of the biggest talents we have in our sport, so I’m looking forward for this one. From an Italian point of view it’s great to have for sure one Italian player in the semis."

He’s got a point. Italian tennis has been on fire lately, with multiple players making deep runs in big tournaments.

The quarter-final should be interesting. Musetti’s got serious talent, but Sinner’s been playing at a completely different level this tournament.

Either way, Italy’s guaranteed to have someone in the semifinals. Not bad for a country that wasn’t exactly known for tennis dominance until recently.
