Jannik Sinner Admits Physical Struggles After Paris Win

-

Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2025 Paris Masters, but it’s clear something’s not right with the Italian star’s health.

The world No. 2 looked pretty uncomfortable during his third-round victory over Francisco Cerundolo. He never actually called for a medical timeout, but anyone watching could tell Sinner wasn’t feeling great out there.

It’s been a rollercoaster few months for the 23-year-old.

Sinner’s been on fire during the Asian swing, capturing the China Open title in Beijing. But then he had to retire mid-match against Tallon Griekspoor at the Shanghai Masters because of injury concerns.

He bounced back nicely though. Sinner pocketed a cool $6 million for winning the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia, then added the Vienna Open title to his collection.

But now those physical issues seem to be creeping back.

After beating Cerundolo, Sinner didn’t try to hide his struggles. He admitted he’s not at 100% and said his main focus is getting his body ready for the bigger challenges ahead.

"I was up twice with the break in the first set, and I could not convert. I put myself in not an easy situation, but I am happy with how I ended the match and I felt much better," Sinner explained.

"Hopefully, it will give me the confidence to start off in a good way tomorrow. Hopefully, I can recover physically, which is my main priority."

The timing couldn’t be more crucial. Sinner’s still fighting for that coveted world No. 1 ranking, especially after Carlos Alcaraz shocked everyone with a first-round exit in Paris.

The Road Gets Much Tougher

If Sinner thought his first two opponents were manageable, he’s in for a reality check.

Up next is Ben Shelton, the rising American star who’s already got an ATP Masters 1000 title under his belt. Shelton’s been playing some really solid tennis lately and won’t be intimidated by Sinner’s ranking.

Things don’t get any easier after that.

The winner of Daniil Medvedev vs. Alexander Zverev awaits in the semifinals. That’s basically a choice between a former world No. 1 and Grand Slam champion (Medvedev) or a two-time ATP Finals winner with seven Masters 1000 titles (Zverev).

Either opponent would be a massive test for a fully healthy Sinner. With his current physical concerns? It’s going to be really tough.

"I’m trying to manage it in the best way, but it’s clear that I’m not at 100%," Sinner admitted. "I felt today’s match was a little less physical, which is good for me. I’m happy to have won it in two sets, in under an hour and a half."

The good news is Sinner seemed to feel better as his match against Cerundolo went on. If he can get a good night’s sleep and some proper recovery time, he might just have enough left in the tank.

But with the Paris Masters title on the line and ranking points that could decide who finishes the year at No. 1, Sinner’s going to need every bit of his talent – and his health – to get through this gauntlet.
