Arthur Fils leads the entry list for the 2025 Winston-Salem Open, but don’t expect any Top 20 players to show up this August. The tournament runs from August 17th to 23rd – just one week before the US Open begins – and that timing makes it a tough sell for tennis’s biggest names.
Here’s why the field looks pretty thin at the top this year.
The US Open organizers decided to shake things up with their mixed doubles format. Instead of running it alongside the main tournament, they’re holding it during Fan Week to attract more star power.
| Name | Age | Points | Stats 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arthur Fils | 21 | 1,155 | 13 - 14 |
And honestly? It worked.
Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, and Nick Kyrgios have all signed up for the mixed doubles showcase. With most top players committing to that event, Winston-Salem is left fighting for the leftovers.
The highest-ranked player on the list is world No. 21 Arthur Fils, the talented 21-year-old from France. But there’s a catch – he hasn’t played since the French Open.
Fils beat Jaume Munar in straight sets at Roland Garros back in May, but suffered a stress fracture in his back during that match. The former Hamburg Open champion is probably using Winston-Salem as a tune-up since he’ll need match practice before the US Open.
Sebastian Korda finds himself in almost the exact same boat. The American hasn’t competed since Paris either, dealing with his own stress fracture – this one in his right shin.
That injury kept him from defending his title in Washington. Korda had started 2025 strong, reaching the Adelaide International final right after returning from elbow surgery, but then struggled with consistency before this latest setback hit.
Alex Michelsen has good reason to feel confident about his chances this year. The 20-year-old American was last year’s runner-up, putting together some really dramatic wins before falling to Lorenzo Sonego in the final.
His semifinal against Christopher Eubanks went to a deciding set tiebreak – the kind of match that builds serious confidence.
Sonego returns to defend his crown. The Italian doesn’t always grab headlines, but he can play incredible tennis on any surface when he’s locked in. His dominant run to last year’s title proved that.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard might be the most dangerous floater in the draw. His serve is absolutely massive – the kind that can decide matches on just a few key points. Just ask Taylor Fritz, who needed five sets to get past him at Wimbledon this year.
Roberto Bautista Agut keeps defying Father Time. At 37, the Spaniard reached the Queen’s Club semifinals just a few weeks ago, showing he’s still got plenty left in the tank.
David Goffin, Nuno Borges, Luciano Darderi, and 2023 champion Sebastian Baez round out the notable names on the entry list.
Will this field produce a surprise US Open contender? Sometimes players find their form at these smaller events right before a major.
