Matteo Berrettini is out of tennis again. The Italian star has withdrawn from the 2025 US Open, marking another disappointing setback in what’s become a frustrating pattern of injuries.
It’s a pretty dramatic fall for someone who was flying high just a few years ago.
Back in 2021, Berrettini had the best season of his career. He followed that up with some solid results in 2022 too. But since then? It’s been one injury after another, keeping him off the court way more than he’d like.
| Name | Age | Points | Stats 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matteo Berrettini | 29 | 630 | 5 - 2 |
The numbers tell a tough story.
In the past two years alone, Berrettini has missed four Grand Slam tournaments. That’s half of all the major championships held during that time. He first skipped the Australian Open and French Open in 2024, though he did manage to reach the second rounds at Wimbledon and the US Open.
This year started with a bit of hope. He made it to the second round at the Australian Open in January. But then he missed the French Open for the fourth straight year and crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round.
Now the US Open will be his fourth major absence in just 24 months.
A Season of Setbacks
The 29-year-old hasn’t been able to play much this season either. In recent months, he’s had to retire from two tournaments mid-competition – first at the Madrid Open, then at the Italian Open in Rome. After that, he withdrew from the French Open entirely.
His only grass-court appearance was Wimbledon, where he lost to Kamil Majchrzak in a disappointing first-round exit.
Since then, it’s been one withdrawal after another. He pulled out of the Kitzbuhel Open, where he was actually the defending champion. The Italian also announced he’d miss both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, saying he wanted to get healthy specifically for the US Open.
Unfortunately, it looks like that recovery time wasn’t enough.
Berrettini’s name was quietly removed from the US Open entry list more than a week before the tournament, which runs from August 24th through September 7th. So much for that plan to get healthy for New York.
Ranking Slide Continues
When you can’t compete regularly, the ranking points just disappear. And that’s exactly what’s happening to Berrettini right now.
He’s currently ranked 59th in the world. That’s a far cry from his career-high of sixth place, back when he was consistently competing at the highest level.
The Italian used to be a legit Top 10 player. But without playing a full schedule, it’s really tough to challenge for those top spots again. You need those week-in, week-out results to climb the rankings.
There’s a bit of irony here though. Berrettini will likely move up the rankings after the Cincinnati Open because he didn’t have any points to defend from last year – he missed that tournament too.
But he’s set to lose points after the US Open and could fall out of the Top 60 entirely.
The hope now is that he can recover in time for the Asian swing later this year. Tournaments in China are being mentioned as a likely target for Berrettini’s return to action.
The question is whether his body will finally cooperate and let him play consistently again.
