Medvedev Bublik Khachanov Tennis Players Update

-

The Asian tennis swing is wrapping up with one final tournament – and it looks like it’s going to be a pretty exciting one. The 2025 Almaty Open in Kazakhstan runs from October 13th to 19th, and some big names have just been announced for the field.

This tournament has quite a story behind it. Back in 2020, when COVID was canceling tournaments left and right, the ATP Tour was scrambling to fill their calendar.

The Almaty Open stepped up to help out.

John Millman won that first edition five years ago, and the tournament was such a hit that it got promoted to 500-level status in 2022. That’s when things got really interesting – Novak Djokovic showed up and beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to take the title.

The event dropped back down to 250-level in 2023 after China eased its COVID restrictions, and moved to Almaty last year. Karen Khachanov had a great run there, beating Gabriel Diallo in what everyone said was a really entertaining three-set final.

Khachanov Returns as Top Seed

Unless someone gets a wild card between now and the start, Khachanov will be back as the No. 1 seed to defend his title.

He looked really comfortable in those conditions almost a year ago. The other players are going to have their work cut out for them if they want to take him down.

This season’s been solid for Khachanov too. He made it all the way to the Canadian Open final, where he lost to Ben Shelton. That final had a pretty funny moment – the crowd went absolutely wild when news came through that Victoria Mboko had won the title in Montreal, and it basically interrupted their match.

Medvedev’s Fresh Start

Daniil Medvedev is probably the biggest name on the list, and he’s coming into this tournament with some major changes happening.

The 2021 US Open champion just split with his long-time coach Gilles Cervara after this year’s US Open. They’d been working together for eight years – that’s pretty much forever in tennis terms.

Medvedev’s brought in Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke to replace Cervara. His first tournament with the new team was at the Hangzhou Open, another ATP 250 event.

Some people are writing off Medvedev’s chances of winning another Grand Slam. He’s had a rough 2025, and Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have been dominating everything lately.

At 29, Medvedev’s definitely trying to prove those doubters wrong.

Bublik Brings the Flair

Alexander Bublik always makes things interesting when he shows up, and this should be no different. The Kazakhstani player has this really flamboyant style that’s fun to watch.

Here’s what’s crazy about Bublik’s season – he’s actually had his best success on clay courts. That’s not what you’d expect from his game at all.

He made the French Open quarterfinals and won back-to-back titles at Gstaad and Kitzbühel. But when Bublik’s playing his best tennis, he’s dangerous anywhere. Just ask Sinner – Bublik beat him at Halle this year and went on to win the whole tournament, taking down Medvedev in the final.

Young Americans Looking to Make a Mark

Gabriel Diallo, last year’s runner-up, is back for another shot. That final was a huge breakthrough moment for him, and he’s gotten even better since then. He picked up his first ATP title at the Libema Open this year.

Alex Michelsen is one of those young American players everyone’s keeping an eye on. The 21-year-old has all the talent in the world – he just needs to put it together consistently. When he’s on though, he could definitely challenge for this title.

The field also includes Brandon Nakashima, Flavio Cobolli, Luciano Darderi, Jordan Thompson, and Corentin Moutet. That’s a pretty solid group of players who’ll be looking to end the Asian swing with a bang.

With Medvedev trying to bounce back from a tough year and Khachanov looking to repeat his success, this could be a really fun way to wrap up the Asian swing. There’s still some wild cards to be announced too, so we might see a few more surprises before tournament time.
