The ATP’s Asian swing kicks off on September 15th with two tournaments running at the same time. One of them is the 2025 Hangzhou Open, and the entry list is pretty stacked with big names.
This is only the second year for the Hangzhou Open. Last year’s debut went so well that the ATP decided to bring it back as a permanent 250-level event.
Marin Cilic won the inaugural tournament in 2024, making tennis history in the process. He became the lowest-ranked player ever to win an ATP title – a pretty amazing comeback story considering he’d been dealing with chronic knee problems for years.

The former US Open champ had barely played for months before his stunning run in Hangzhou.
Cilic’s back on this year’s entry list, hoping to defend his title. But there’s a big question mark over his fitness. He hasn’t played since losing in the fourth round at Wimbledon because of another injury flare-up.
Medvedev’s Title Drought Continues
Daniil Medvedev is probably the biggest name heading to Hangzhou. The Russian is desperately searching for his first title in over two years – unless he somehow wins the US Open first.
But let’s be honest, Medvedev isn’t exactly among the favorites at Flushing Meadows right now.
Ever since he blew that two-set lead against Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Australian Open final, Medvedev just hasn’t been the same player. His last title came at the 2023 Italian Open – 27 months ago.
For a guy who used to be world No. 1, that’s a really long drought.
An ATP 250 tournament on hard courts might be Medvedev’s best shot at ending this nightmare streak. Even with the strong field in Hangzhou, it’s probably more realistic than hoping for a Grand Slam breakthrough right now.
Medvedev’s been making headlines lately for all the wrong reasons, complaining about the tennis calendar and even threatening to boycott matches if things don’t change. The ATP probably isn’t thrilled about that kind of talk spreading to other players.
Russian Connection
Andrey Rublev, Medvedev’s close friend, is also signed up for Hangzhou. The guy’s reached ten Grand Slam quarterfinals but has never quite gotten over the hump to the semis.
This year’s been pretty up and down for Rublev, though he did manage to win the Qatar Open back in February.
If the court conditions are similar to last year, they should suit his powerful game perfectly. Plus, he looked pretty solid reaching the quarters at both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open recently.
Maybe that’s a sign that more consistent results are coming.
Injury Concerns
Matteo Berrettini is technically on the entry list, but don’t count on seeing him play. The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up has barely been on court since the Italian Open in May and just pulled out of the US Open with an injury.
It’s been a really tough stretch for the Italian, who was starting to look like his old self before this latest setback.
Entertainment Guaranteed
Alexander Bublik signing up for any tournament is good news for fans who love unpredictable tennis. The guy’s style is absolutely wild – you never know what you’re going to get.
Tournament organizers in Hangzhou had to be thrilled when this year’s surprise French Open quarterfinalist committed to playing. Bublik always brings the entertainment factor.
The rest of the field includes some solid names: Karen Khachanov (who just reached the Canadian Open final), Roberto Bautista Agut, David Goffin, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Adrian Mannarino.
Strong Field, Open Tournament
With this kind of depth, picking a favorite is really tough. That’s probably good news for the tournament – it means we could see some great tennis and maybe a few surprises along the way.
The 2025 Hangzhou Open should live up to all the expectations after last year’s successful debut.
