Nick Kyrgios Confirms Comeback Tournament After Injury Layoff

-

Nick Kyrgios is making another comeback from injury after announcing he’ll play at a tournament later this month.

It’s been a pretty tough journey for the Australian. His long-awaited return to the ATP Tour started at the beginning of this year after he’d only played one tournament in the previous two years. Those severe wrist and knee injuries really knocked him out of the game.

Unfortunately, his wrist is still giving him problems.

He had to retire during the second set against Botic van de Zandschulp at Indian Wells. Then the same thing happened after just one set against Karen Khachanov in Miami.

Here’s the thing though – the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up has shown flashes of his old brilliance in every match he’s played. The technical ability is definitely still there. Whether he’ll ever fully overcome that troublesome wrist? That’s anyone’s guess.

That Miami match against Khachanov was his last appearance. Kyrgios had to withdraw from the entire grass-court season after another setback when he was trying to get back to full fitness.

But you’ve got to give the guy credit – he’s not giving up.

Most players would’ve called it quits by now after dealing with so many repeated injury issues over the last few years. But Kyrgios is determined to keep competing while he still can.

He’s just confirmed he’ll play at the 2025 Citi Open in Washington, which runs from July 21st to 27th. This tournament holds special meaning for him – he’s won it twice before and clearly loves playing there.

"Hey guys, it’s Nick Kyrgios here. I cannot wait to be returning this summer to DC for the Mubadala Citi DC Open. It’s one of my favorite tournaments. I love the fans, I love the energy, and as two-time champion, I never feel more comfortable at any other event. So, make sure to get your tickets, and let’s run this back. I can’t wait to see you all."

His last appearance at this ATP 500 tournament was during his second title run back in 2022. The 30-year-old was on fire that summer – just a few weeks after reaching the Wimbledon final, he beat Yoshihito Nishioka to claim another title in the American capital.

Look, Kyrgios can be pretty divisive. His fiery antics on court and controversial opinions off it definitely split fans down the middle.

But here’s what nobody can argue with – the guy draws crowds. Expect the stadium to be packed when he steps out for his opening round match.

The Citi Open is a combined ATP and WTA event. On the women’s side, some big names are already on the entry list – Emma Raducanu, Jessica Pegula, and Elena Rybakina are all set to compete.

Fans got even more exciting news when Venus Williams announced she’s making her first WTA Tour appearance in nearly 16 months after accepting a wild card for the tournament.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion is now 45 years old and currently unranked. But that hasn’t stopped her from deciding to return to professional tennis. Hopefully she can put on a show for the fans, regardless of how far she goes.

Having both Kyrgios and Williams involved adds an extra layer of excitement to what was already shaping up to be a great event in Washington. Last year’s tournament saw Paula Badosa win her first title in over two years.

It’s pretty amazing to see these veterans still fighting to compete at the highest level.
