Novak Djokovic to Play at 2025 ATP Finals Confirms Italian Tennis Chief

-

Novak Djokovic is officially heading to Turin for the 2025 ATP Finals. The Italian Tennis Federation chief just confirmed what tennis fans have been hoping to hear.

At 38, Djokovic’s tournament schedule isn’t as predictable as it used to be. Fitness issues and his careful approach to picking events had everyone wondering if he’d even show up to the year-end championships.

Last year really caught people off guard.

Djokovic completely skipped the 2024 ATP Finals, which was pretty shocking. Sure, he’s been playing fewer tournaments lately, but missing the biggest event outside the Grand Slams? That definitely raised some eyebrows.

Instead of competing in Turin, he chose to vacation with his family and focus on getting ready for the Australian Open. His strategy was clear – the four Grand Slams were everything, and other tournaments were just tune-ups.

But something shifted after his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open semifinal.

Djokovic admitted something really interesting. He thinks his best shot at beating Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner comes in best-of-three set matches, not the marathon five-set Grand Slam format.

That mindset probably influenced his decision to play the ATP Finals, where matches are shorter.

Angelo Binaghi, chief of the Italian Tennis Federation, broke the news on Rai Gr Parlamento Radio.

"We have confirmation that Djokovic will be in Turin."

This is huge for the tournament. Djokovic holds the record with seven ATP Finals titles, so having him there automatically makes this one of the most exciting events of 2025.

The guy reached the semifinals at all four Grand Slams this year. When he’s healthy and playing well, he’s still clearly the third-best player on tour.

Here’s the thing though – Djokovic’s biggest problem in 2025 has been his fitness falling apart right when it matters most.

He had to retire against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open. He was clearly in pain during his Wimbledon match against Sinner. The French Open and US Open? More aches and pains.

The shorter format at the ATP Finals might actually work in his favor.

One thing’s guaranteed – the draw will pit him against either Alcaraz or Sinner in the group stage. That matchup alone is worth the price of admission.

Getting Ready in Athens

Djokovic owns the license for a tournament happening this week. Last year it was in Belgrade, though he didn’t play after ending his season early following the Six Kings Slam.

The event moved from Belgrade to Athens for 2025. There were reportedly some tensions between Djokovic and the Serbian government, which probably explains the change of location.

His participation was up in the air after his brother gave a concerning update about Djokovic’s fitness. But recent footage showed him practicing at the arena in Athens, where he now lives.

Tournament organizers must be breathing a sigh of relief, especially after Stefanos Tsitsipas withdrew from the event.

The hope now is that Djokovic stays healthy in Athens and arrives in Turin completely ready to battle the young guns in the shorter format that might just give him the edge he’s looking for.
