The 2025 Swiss Indoors in Basel has dropped its entry list, and it’s packed with some pretty big names looking to make their mark on one of tennis’s most historic tournaments.
This event has serious pedigree. It’s been running since 1970 and has only missed two years – 2020 and 2021 because of COVID. That’s 55 years of tennis history right there.
Roger Federer basically turned this tournament into his personal playground. The Swiss legend won it a ridiculous 10 times, with his last victory coming in 2019. His presence is probably what got the event upgraded from a 250-level tournament to its current 500-level status back in 2009.

The tournament’s winner’s list reads like a who’s who of tennis. We’re talking Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, and John McEnroe.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is the defending champion after beating Ben Shelton 6-4, 7-6 in what was basically a serving masterclass. The Frenchman’s serve was absolutely lethal in those indoor conditions.
The Big Names Coming Back
Shelton’s on this year’s entry list, but there’s a question mark over his participation. He had to retire from his US Open third-round match against Adrian Mannarino with a shoulder injury.
That moment was heartbreaking for the American. Many people had him pegged as one of the dark horses for the US Open title, right behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Taylor Fritz is also heading to Basel, and he’s been on fire lately. Since June started, he’s won more ATP matches than anyone else on tour.
That includes title runs in Stuttgart and Eastbourne – both on grass. But Fritz really shines on hard courts. Just look at his 2024 season – he made the US Open final and the ATP Finals final. Plus he’s got that 2022 Indian Wells title under his belt.
He’ll definitely be one of the favorites in Basel.
Holger Rune was the 2022 runner-up here, losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 22-year-old Dane will be hoping to tap into those good memories after a pretty tough season.
His Barcelona Open win was really the only bright spot in 2025. While Sinner and Alcaraz are way ahead of everyone right now, Rune’s still young enough to figure things out and start challenging for the biggest trophies again.
Casper Ruud had his moment this year winning the Madrid Open. Indoor courts aren’t really his natural surface, but he did make the 2022 ATP Finals final, so he can definitely play indoors when he needs to.
The Next Generation and Veterans
Joao Fonseca brings something special wherever he goes – the Brazilian crowd support is incredible. Even in Basel, you can bet there’ll be some Brazilian flags in the stands cheering him on.
Here’s something pretty amazing: Stan Wawrinka got a wild card for this tournament. The three-time Grand Slam champion is 40 years old and still competing at this level. Being Swiss definitely helped him get that wild card, but he’s also shown he can still play. He even got a wild card for the Shanghai Masters earlier this year.
The entry list also includes two-time Basel winner Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, Sebastian Korda, Jiri Lehecka, and Arthur Fils.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Fritz can follow up his incredible 2024 season with another strong showing. With Federer’s era at Basel now over, there’s definitely room for a new champion to make their mark on this historic tournament.
The indoor courts should really suit the big servers like Mpetshi Perricard and potentially Shelton if he’s healthy enough to play. Could we see another serving masterclass in Basel?
