Tiafoe Auger-Aliassime Fonseca Tennis Players Update

-

The European Open is getting a major makeover this year. For the first time since the tournament started back in 2016, it’s leaving its longtime home in Antwerp and heading to Brussels. The ATP 250 event runs October 13-19 at the Brussels Expo, Belgium’s main event complex in the capital.

It’s a pretty big gamble moving a successful tournament to a new city. The organizers are obviously hoping Brussels fans will show up and make this transition work.

Felix Auger-Aliassime headlines the field as the second seed, and he’s got some seriously good memories from this tournament. The Canadian absolutely dominated here in 2022, beating Sebastian Korda for the title.

That win was part of an incredible hot streak for Auger-Aliassime. He won three tournaments that October – this one plus Florence and Basel.

Six of his seven ATP titles have come on indoor courts. When he’s playing at that level, he’s one of the most dangerous hard-court players in the world.

The 25-year-old is coming off a solid North American swing too. He made the US Open semifinals and reached the Cincinnati quarterfinals, so his confidence should be pretty high heading into the indoor season.

Tiafoe Hunting for First 2025 Title

Frances Tiafoe enters as the fifth seed, but indoor tennis hasn’t been his strongest surface. Despite reaching ten ATP finals overall, his only indoor final came at the 2021 Vienna Open, where he lost to Alexander Zverev.

That’s a stat the two-time US Open semifinalist would love to change in Brussels.

Time’s running out for Tiafoe to grab his first title of 2025. It’s been a tough year for the American, and a good run here could really turn things around.

Lorenzo Musetti leads the field as the top seed. The Italian’s ranking comes mainly from his incredible clay-court season earlier this year. He lost a tight final to Carlos Alcaraz at Monte-Carlo and made semifinals in Madrid, Rome, and at the French Open.

His results since then haven’t quite matched those heights, though he did make a solid run to the US Open quarterfinals. Musetti’s one of the most elegant players to watch – his fluid style should be perfect for the indoor courts in Brussels.

Brazilian Teenager Could Cause Chaos

Keep an eye on Joao Fonseca. The Brazilian teenager is still pretty inconsistent and has plenty to work on, but people in tennis are already talking about him as a future superstar.

Indoor courts probably aren’t his best surface compared to outdoor clay or hard courts. But he’s got the kind of game that can cause problems anywhere.

His forehand is already one of the most powerful shots in tennis. Crowds literally gasp when he connects cleanly on that wing.

The tournament has some serious history behind it. French legend Richard Gasquet won the very first European Open back in 2016. Jannik Sinner, Andy Murray, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have all lifted the trophy in Antwerp over the years.

Other notable names in the field include Jiri Lehecka, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Benjamin Bonzi, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Jaume Munar.

The European Open faces competition that week from the Almaty Open and Stockholm Open, both running at the same time.

Belgian fans get a special treat with David Goffin receiving a wildcard into his home tournament. The move to Brussels gives the former top-10 player a chance to play in front of his countrymen one more time.
