Alcaraz Eyes 4th Major, Still Distant from World No. 1

-

Carlos Alcaraz has been a standout on the ATP Tour for the last two years, but his time as world no. 1 was short-lived.

After winning the 2022 US Open and becoming the youngest man to reach world no. 1, many thought Alcaraz would hold that spot for a long time. However, his reign ended sooner than expected.

Alcaraz’s first stint at the top lasted only 20 weeks before Novak Djokovic dethroned him. Despite reclaiming the spot three more times, Djokovic always managed to take it back .

Challenges and Injuries

Since first reaching world no. 1 in 2022, Alcaraz held the position for just 36 weeks. His injury-prone body has been a major factor in this short reign; he missed several tournaments due to injuries, including the Australian Open in 2023.

This year has also seen him miss many events, which is why he’s currently far from being world no. 1 in ATP Rankings. Jannik Sinner is now holding that top spot and looks set to keep it for some time.

Fans might feel disappointed seeing their favorite player struggle with injuries so often.

At Wimbledon Championships coming up soon, Alcaraz will be defending his title but can’t gain any additional points from it. If he exits early or if Alexander Zverev performs exceptionally well, Alcaraz could drop to world no. 4.

Even winning Wimbledon again won’t be enough to put him back at the top of ATP Rankings or even into the Top 2 spots.

Oddly enough, despite potentially having four Grand Slam titles within two years and three within twelve months, his total time as world no. 1 would still be just those same old 36 weeks.

Comparisons with WTA’s Iga Swiatek make this statistic seem even more surprising. Swiatek has won five majors overall—four in just two years—and spent an impressive 108 weeks as WTA’s highest-ranked player.

Swiatek’s success includes numerous WTA 1000 events which helped her maintain her rank; however, most of her major wins were limited to Roland Garros with only one other Grand Slam victory at US Open in 2022.

This highlights how earning points at majors can vary greatly between players like Swiatek and Alcaraz who became youngest ever winner on all three surfaces yet struggled recently with maintaining high ranking records consistently due largely due frequent injuries affecting performance levels across seasons unpredictably!
