Carlos Alcaraz is back on top of the tennis world. The 21-year-old Spaniard just reclaimed the No. 1 ranking for the first time in nearly a year.
It’s pretty amazing how history keeps repeating itself for Alcaraz. He first hit No. 1 back in 2022 after winning his first US Open title. Fast forward two years, and he’s done it again – won the US Open, and boom, he’s back at the top.
Alcaraz last held the top spot on September 10th, 2023. That’s when Novak Djokovic took over and stayed there for 39 weeks.
| Name | Age | Points | Stats 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carlos Alcaraz | 22 | 68,791 | 25 - 5 |
Then Jannik Sinner grabbed it and held on for 15 weeks. But Sinner’s reign just ended after he lost in the US Open final.
Now Alcaraz has started his fifth separate stint as world No. 1. At just 21, that’s really impressive.
The numbers tell the story pretty clearly. Alcaraz sits at 11,540 points, which puts him 760 points ahead of Sinner’s 10,780. That might sound close, but here’s the thing – Sinner has way more points to defend in the coming months.
This year alone, Alcaraz has racked up 10,540 points while Sinner’s managed 7,950.
The Big Gap Behind the Top Two
Alexander Zverev is hanging onto third place, but he’s nowhere near the top two guys. The German has 5,930 points – that’s almost 5,000 points behind Alcaraz.
Zverev’s actually lost 300 points compared to last year, so he’s not exactly closing the gap.
But he’s still doing okay. He’s got a comfortable 1,100-point cushion over fourth place.
That fourth spot belongs to Novak Djokovic, who just jumped up three positions after reaching the US Open semifinals. Not bad for a 37-year-old who many thought was slowing down.
Here’s the thing about Djokovic though – he’s probably going to start sliding down the rankings soon. Word is he’s only planning to play one more tournament this year, some ATP 250 event in Greece.
American Battle Heating Up
Taylor Fritz is still the top American at No. 5, but he dropped one spot and now has 4,675 points.
Ben Shelton is breathing down his neck at No. 6 with 4,280 points. The race for top American is getting pretty interesting.
Jack Draper had some bad luck – he had to pull out of the US Open because of injury. That withdrawal cost him, and he’s now seventh with 3,690 points.
The rest of the top 10 is bunched up tight. Alex de Minaur (8th, 3,545 points), Lorenzo Musetti (9th, 3,505 points), and Karen Khachanov (10th, 3,280 points) are all within a few hundred points of each other.
Big Movers
Felix Auger-Aliassime had been struggling for months, but his US Open run changed everything. He shot up 14 spots to No. 13 with 2,755 points.
That’s exactly the same number of points as Casper Ruud, who’s sitting just ahead of him at No. 12.
On the flip side, Frances Tiafoe had a rough time defending his points. Last year he made the semifinals, but this time he was out in the third round. That sent him tumbling down to No. 29.
The rankings always shift after the US Open, but this year’s changes feel pretty significant. With Djokovic likely to play less and Sinner having points to defend, Alcaraz might have a real chance to hold onto that No. 1 spot for a while.
