Carlos Alcaraz just wrapped up an incredible achievement at the 2025 ATP Finals, finishing as the year-end No. 1 for the second time in his career.
But former tennis pro Sam Querrey wasn’t talking about his tennis skills.
He was focused on something completely different – Alcaraz’s outfit choice for the trophy ceremony.
| Name | Age | Points | Stats 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carlos Alcaraz | 22 | 68,791 | 25 - 5 |
The 22-year-old Spaniard sealed his place at No. 1 by beating Lorenzo Musetti at the ATP Finals in Turin. He’d already beaten Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz earlier, so he only needed one more win to lock it up.
Pretty impressive stuff. Alcaraz last finished as year-end No. 1 back in 2022, just a few months after winning his first Grand Slam at the US Open.
The Fashion Police Strike
After the Musetti match, they held a ceremony to celebrate Alcaraz becoming 2025’s top player.
For the big moment, he wore a suit jacket with a striped blue-and-white shirt underneath. But here’s what caught Querrey’s attention – no tie.
On his Nothing Major Podcast, Querrey didn’t hold back about the Spanish star’s look.
"Did you guys see Carlos? He got, like, the trophy yesterday on the court for winning, for making number one in the world. Little ceremony. First time I’ve ever seen him not look super smooth. The suit that he was wearing was, like, meh."
Ouch. That’s coming from a guy who knows what it’s like to play on tennis’s biggest stages.
"I’m just saying, like, the hair, anything he does with his hair, you’re like, ‘All right, Carlos, he’s pulling it off.’ It was, like, the first time it didn’t look perfect."
The Federer Standard
Querrey then brought up Roger Federer, who’s basically the gold standard when it comes to looking absolutely perfect on a tennis court – or anywhere else, really.
The American thinks Fed would’ve definitely worn a tie for such an important ceremony, even after playing a tough match.
"We’re so used to Roger looking, like, absolutely perfect every time he gets, like, an award. Like it’s… like just a perfect suit, button-up, tie, like Fed. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just used to Fed, who would just, like, wear a tie."
Fair point. Federer was known for his impeccable style both on and off the court throughout his career.
The Finals That Got Away
While Alcaraz nailed the year-end No. 1 ranking, he couldn’t quite finish the job at the ATP Finals itself.
Jannik Sinner beat him in the final on Sunday, winning 6-7, 5-7 on home soil in Turin. These two have been going at it all year – they’ve actually played in the last three Grand Slam finals.
Alcaraz had a set point in the first set while Sinner was serving, but the Italian found a huge serve at exactly the right moment to save it.
The ATP Finals and Australian Open remain the biggest titles that Alcaraz hasn’t won yet. After he wraps up the 2025 Davis Cup Finals, he’ll start getting ready for the 2026 Australian Open.
Here’s something pretty crazy: Alcaraz and Sinner have never actually played each other at the Australian Open. Sinner’s won it the last two years, beating Alexander Zverev in this year’s final.
If these two meet in the 2026 Australian Open final, they’ll have played in the most recent final at all four Grand Slams.
That would basically confirm what we already know – these guys are running the show on the ATP Tour right now.
