Jannik Sinner Skips 2025 Davis Cup Finals Despite Back-to-Back Title Wins

-

Jannik Sinner won’t be defending Italy’s Davis Cup title this year, and that’s a pretty big deal.

The world No. 2 has been absolutely crucial to Italy’s recent success in tennis’s premier team competition. He led his country to their first Davis Cup win in 47 years back in 2023, then followed it up with another perfect performance last year.

Sinner didn’t lose a single match across both tournaments.

This year’s finals are being held in Bologna, Italy from November 18-23. It’s the first time Italy has hosted the event since 1998, which makes Sinner’s absence even more surprising.

Team captain Filippo Volandri announced his lineup without Italy’s top player, going instead with Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Berrettini, Flavio Cobolli, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori.

There were hints Sinner might skip the finals, but it still seemed pretty unthinkable given his recent dominance and the home crowd advantage.

A Team Trying to Stay Positive

Volandri is putting on a brave face about losing his star player. He’s focusing on the team spirit that’s helped Italy win back-to-back titles.

"With our Italian players, we have built our recent successes on team spirit and mutual trust. This trust is based on hard work and the constant dedication of each member to the others."

The captain sounds confident his remaining squad can pull off something special in Bologna.

"We will have to overcome tough opponents, starting with Austria, but I am fortunate to be able to count on a broad roster of players that will allow us to face this challenge with full conviction."

But he’s also keeping the door open for Sinner’s return.

"Jannik Sinner has not confirmed his availability for 2025. The Davis Cup is, and will always be, his home, and I am certain that Jannik will soon return to the team."

Federation President Speaks Out

Angelo Binaghi, who heads Italy’s tennis federation, was more direct about his disappointment. Though he says he understands Sinner’s decision after such a long season.

"We understand and respect Jannik’s decision, which is deeply painful for us, and which comes at the end of a long and intense season."

It’s been a pretty grueling year for Sinner. He’s dealt with injury concerns and the pressure of being one of the world’s best players.

Binaghi still believes the Davis Cup means something special to Sinner.

"For him—and for all of us—the Davis Cup represents a symbol of pride and belonging, and we are certain he will soon return to wear the blue jersey with the same passion and determination as always."

The Road Ahead

Italy starts their title defense against Austria in the opening round. As the top seeds, they’re still favorites despite missing their best player.

If they get past Austria, they’ll face either France or Belgium in the next round.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz will lead Spain and Alexander Zverev heads Germany’s team. Both players confirmed their participation, making Italy’s situation even tougher.

Tennis is absolutely booming in Italy right now, partly thanks to Sinner’s success. Italian fans were probably expecting to see their hero perform on home soil.

Instead, they’ll have to watch a team trying to prove they can win without their biggest star. It’s definitely going to be an uphill battle for a historic third straight title.
