Jannik Sinner is back on court for the first time since his incredible Wimbledon win. But there’s been some buzz about his elbow, and he’s finally setting the record straight.
The Italian tennis star had quite the drama at Wimbledon this year. He was down 0-2 against Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round when things got really messy.
Sinner took a nasty fall early in that match. His right elbow started giving him trouble right from that moment.
| Name | Age | Points | Stats 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jannik Sinner | 24 | 15,405 | 33 - 3 |
But here’s the crazy part – Dimitrov ended up retiring from the match due to his own injury in the third set. Talk about a lucky break for Sinner, who went on to win the whole tournament.
Since that fall, Sinner’s been playing with an arm sleeve to protect his elbow. At Wimbledon, he had heavy strapping underneath it too.
The good news? That extra strapping is gone now as he prepares for the 2025 Cincinnati Open.
It’s Not What You Think
During his first practice session in Cincinnati, Sinner was still wearing the sleeve. And yeah, people noticed.
But he’s not worried about it at all. Turns out, he actually likes how it feels.
"Today was the first time that I put the sleeve on because I liked the feeling of the sleeve. The impact with the ball is slightly more stable, that’s my point of view and I liked it at Wimbledon."
The only thing he’s testing now is how it works in Cincinnati’s brutal heat and humidity. That’s a whole different challenge than the cooler courts at Wimbledon.
"I had to see how it is when it’s very hot and humid because it’s a little bit different. It’s gonna be something that I take into consideration, but I really love the feeling of pure striking."
Why He Skipped Toronto
Sinner was one of several big names who pulled out of the Canadian Open in Toronto. Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper all did the same thing.
For Sinner, it was all about learning from past mistakes. He’s realized that jumping back into tournaments too quickly after big wins hasn’t worked out well for him.
"The body and mind need to recover and need to understand what happened. I’m very happy I took some time off after [Wimbledon], seeing my family and friends and very important people I have around."
Smart move, honestly. Winning Wimbledon is pretty huge, and sometimes you need a minute to let that sink in.
"In the past, I made some mistakes sometimes, starting too early at times. I had conversations with the whole team, trying to understand what’s best. When you win big titles, they are very special moments and [then] you have to leave them."
Cincinnati’s Massive Makeover
The World No. 1 player couldn’t help but notice Cincinnati’s incredible renovations. Tournament organizers dropped hundreds of millions of dollars to completely transform the venue.
And Sinner’s pretty impressed with what they’ve done.
"It’s amazing what they did in one year. Everything has improved so, so much, but mostly the space they have for us players. Things inside and outside, the dining area is much, much bigger and when you come from the transportation, it’s like a hotel. It’s amazing. Incredible."
The upgrades are especially focused on player amenities – bigger dining areas, better facilities, and an overall experience that feels more like a luxury hotel than a tennis venue.
Not bad for a guy who’s about to defend his status as the top player in the world.
