Alcaraz Spain & Sinner Italy Draw Opposite Halves

-

The 2025 Davis Cup Finals draw is out, and tennis fans have plenty to get excited about.

This year’s "World Cup of Tennis" runs from November 18th to 23rd in Italy. The hosts are also the top seeds after winning back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, which means they got a free pass straight to the Final 8 without having to play qualifying matches.

Everyone was wondering if we’d see a blockbuster first-round matchup between Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Since Spain wasn’t seeded, that dream clash was definitely possible.

But it didn’t happen.

Instead, Italy drew Austria as their opening opponents. The Austrians beat Finland 4-0 in qualifying, then squeezed past Hungary in a nail-biter that went to a deciding fifth match. Here’s the thing though – Austria only has one player in the ATP Top 100 right now.

Italy should cruise through this one.

The winners of that match will face either France or Belgium in the next round. Belgium’s got just one Top 50 player, making them massive underdogs against the French. But don’t write them off just yet – they’ve already pulled off some pretty amazing upsets to get here.

First, Belgium beat Chile 3-1. Then they absolutely stunned second-seeded Australia 3-2.

France, meanwhile, has been dominant. They demolished Brazil 4-0 and easily handled Croatia 3-1. The French have an incredible depth with 13 players in the Top 100, but here’s the catch – none of them are in the Top 20.

That could be a problem when it comes to the big moments.

Spain will be counting on their star power too. After an incredible comeback from 0-2 down against Denmark – led by Pablo Carreno Busta, Jaume Munar, and Pedro Martinez – team captain David Ferrer is hoping world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz joins the squad for the finals.

But Spain got dealt a really tough hand in the draw.

They’ll face fourth-seeded Czechia in the quarterfinals. The Czech team knocked out the USA in qualifying and they’ve got a really strong group of young, talented players who aren’t intimidated by anyone.

The final quarterfinal pits second-seeded Germany against Argentina. Germany was pretty much perfect in qualifying – they didn’t lose a single match that mattered (there was one dead rubber that doesn’t really count).

They beat Israel 3-0 and did the same to Japan. But Germany’s chances will depend heavily on whether Alexander Zverev decides to play.

France [3] vs Belgium
Spain vs Czechia [4]

The tournament is shaping up to be pretty unpredictable. With so many top players potentially missing and some real underdog stories already brewing, this could be one of the most interesting Davis Cup finals in years.
